SOCIAL MEDIA DETOX
It’s hard to remember a time when I didn’t wake up to a phone alarm in the morning and begin my day with browsing my social media accounts. Can you? Social media has become such a mainstream part of everyday life. We rely on it heavily to keep us updated on fashion, fun events happening and other people’s lives. I have found it to be a necessary evil. I have adopted it reluctantly for a business that relies heavily on it, but a decision I made with eyes wide open. I know the amazing benefits the “free advertising” provides and that it keeps people in contact, but I’m also aware that the platform can unfortunately lend itself to that of “illusion.”
Social media has changed how we experience life. How we meet people. How we love. How we interact with others. Is it for the better? Is it taking up too much of our time? Not allowing us to be in the moment? This is a question I have asked myself a lot lately. Do I need to take a break from it, re-group and start soaking in every moment with out having to document it? My answer…maybe…YES! I could certainly take that time and put it to better use!
What a fabulous thing to live in the moment, be present with nothing else on your mind, but breathing and enjoying the company you are in. It’s become such a novelty these days! I honestly think I do this for the most part. I keep my phone in my purse when at dinner or hanging out with anyone!!! I just really want to hold myself 100% accountable this year and be more aware when I know I’m not being present. Don’t get me wrong, I am grateful for the wonderful things social media does provide, but just like anything in life, sometimes we need to step back and refresh a little to appreciate it in the right way.
Right now, I find I miss the days of actually wondering how my friends are and picking up the phone to find out (the truth)! I miss them doing the same! There’s just something about the effort of a phone call that speaks volumes. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said to a friend recently, “ wow, you and your boyfriend look so happy together in those pics!” to get the response back of, “Ugh, I don’t even like him!” Wait, what?? The façade of the media world is so humorous to me and I’m wise enough to only take it with a very small grain of salt!! lol
I miss the days of meeting someone naturally and getting to know them for who they are (to me). Now, take a quick peek at Facebook and you know every one you have in common! It has definitely taken a substantial chunk out of the element of intrigue and excitement. That serendipitous moment that I always valued, now takes on a whole different dimension.
I used to love Facebook when it was all pictures. It kept me in touch with my friends across the U.S. It allowed me to a snapshot of their lives since I couldn’t be there in person. Now, it’s become a home for political views and rants about the terrible things going on in the world. Which, let’s face it if you are not under a rock, you are well aware already! And it is with that thought that, YUP…It’s time for a social media detox… or at least a Facebook detox! Lol Baby steps! Ahaha Adios Facebookers! Tata for now! So… follow me on Instagram @spandexandsundresses 😉 or call me!!! lol
