This is my favorite go to after the powerful rays of the summer sun have subsided. At this point, no matter how much sunblock or hats I wore, I still have sun damage. As I have gotten older, chemical peels have become a staple in my anti-aging collection. The chemical peel I choose for my skin is the Jessner peel. This peel has salicylic, resorcinol, and lactic acid as its active ingredients. It is on the lighter side of peels.
Clean-faced I sat down and Amberlee- my Aesthetician @ La Jolla Cosmetic Laser Clinic got me my fan and loaded up my lips with Vaseline to protect them (2 requirements that I have learned make my experience much more comfortable) Here we go.. she always asks me if I’m ready. You are never really ready for it, but I am always ready for the gorgeous skin to follow!! With quick swipes (there is definitely a skilled technique to this), she covers every part of the face, neck and chest(neck and chest are extra $) keeping far enough away from your eyes, but close enough to get those damn crows feet!!! As she swipes, you can feel the heat on your face building up. It is a little scary (hence the fan-it helps to keep it manageable). You can do multiple passes, but it all depends on your tolerance and your skin’s tolerance. I do multiple, but I have done them many times before.
What you can expect to feel after is a little burning sensation on your face, and you will be red, probably a little shiny. The redness for me subsides by the time I walk out the door.
The first day I wake up with the face of myself 5 years younger. Woo Hoo! It doesn’t last, but I enjoy it while I can! Ha! Taut and fabulous, however most times it’s so tight its hard to smile! Ha!
By the time the next day rolls around (depending on the amount of passes I did) I start to peel, usually around my mouth first. Can you tell I’m a talker!!! Ahaha!
Then by the 3rd or 4th day I’m in full out peel mode. A little embarrassing, but I’m so used to it, I tell people I had a peel and they just laugh.
By the end of the week, my skin looks and feels amazing! My pigmentation is almost gone. My skin is smoother. My products and make up go on better. I truly do feel over those next few weeks that my skin looks and feels younger. A year or two, nothing drastic, but definitely less visible sun damage!!! A week downtime for me is well worth the result. I always get compliments about my skin soon after my peel from people who have no idea I had a peel.
The things I do to make my peel work best:
- Do not touch, pick at or peel the skin off your face before it is ready to come off on its own!
- STAY OUT OF THE SUN. WEAR A LARGE BRIM HAT AND SUNBLOCK ALL THE TIME (sun hours of course)! You don’t want to ruin the money you just spent
- DO NOT PUT ANYTHING RETINOL ORIENTED ON YOUR FACE AFTER.
- Keep your face moisturized
- Not recommended in the summer
And last, Smile, because you look fabulous, shiny and more radiant!!!
